Remembering Raymond John Mathieson
Remembering Raymond John Mathieson
Story
Raymond John Mathieson ‘Ray’ was an inspirational and unfalteringly brave man whose legacy will live on. He dedicated decades of tireless work to his beloved Manly community and loved the sea and his family and friends.
Ray, a former Bank Manager, was diagnosed with an aggressive Glioblastoma or GBM brain cancer in September 2021, & after successful radiation, chemotherapy and brain surgery, backed by a litany of natural therapies, exercise, green juices & a strict diet, he was determined to beat it with his trademark humour and love for life. When he was given his drivers licence back post surgery he thought he had!
But despite his valiant fight, and lifelong health and fitness lifestyle, it was not to be, he succumbed to this terrible disease on the 21st July 2022, the day after world GBM awareness day and just before his 50th wedding anniversary.
We would like to thank his ‘dream team’ Surgeon Dr Raymond Cook, Radiation specialist Dr Michael Back, and Medical Oncologist Dr Helen Wheeler.
He died surrounded by his beloved wife Anne and 2 daughters Melissa and Tara. We would also like to thank the special staff on ward 5A at the Northern Beaches Hospital who treated him with such compassion and kindness in his last few days. His kind heart will live on in his many dear friends, as well as Anne and ‘his girls’ including his 5 adoring granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Mark Hughes Foundation that continues to fund research into this little known, surprisingly common and ultimately devastating terminal brain cancer. We hope that a future cure will stop others families suffering the supreme loss we now share.
